Winner of the Abstract category, Phoenix Rising by Paul Hoelen made everyone’s jaws drop. The rainbow-hued shot which transforms into a swirly aesthetic pattern is actually the depiction of a regeneration process at the industrial mining site of Lake Owen.

The name of the shot comes from a bird who regenerates from its own ashes and that’s the image that this shot aims to evoke.

The Bottom Line

Every once in a while, it’s good to have a change of perspective, or we run the risk of being stagnant. This is exactly the kind of idea The Drone awards are invoking.

These awards take us away from the traditional, primordial idea of photography, asking people to look deeper within the art. The winners take us on a tour of extraordinary aerial shoots of otherwise mundane things, made awe-inspiring with just a switch in perspective.
