Essential Oils

There is a budding popularity of essential oils being used as a form of alternative medicine for a number of health issues. Given that most essential oils are organic or made from natural plants, they are believed to have a few side effects.

Essential oils are extracted from different parts of natural plants. They include roots, flowers, seeds, and bark. They are made through a process called “distillation” via water, steam, or cold pressing.

The oils you extract capture the plant’s flavor and scent, sometimes called “essence”. Different aromatic compounds give characteristic essential oil essence.

How to Use Essential Oils

The extracted essential oil is known to be concentrated and potent. Therefore, it is advisable you mix it with a carrier oil to reduce it’s potency. It is advisable to use most essential oils topically or inhalation as opposed to ingesting.

However, this applies mainly to skin problems. But, with heartburn, some people prefer to mix two to four drops of their desired essential oil in a cup of tea or water and take.

Different essential oils work differently. Therefore, you might want to try a few of them separately, inch by inch to see, which one effectively relieves heartburn symptoms.

Allergic Reactions

Also, some people are known to be allergic to some essential oil compounds. This trial and error method is a great way to choose which oil works for you and which one doesn’t. Eliminate those that you react to.

Sometimes, you might want to use a combination. From the trial and error method above, you are able to know which oil relieves heartburn symptoms, and which one is harsh on you.

Ginger

However, ingesting essential oils should be done with care as it might cause adverse effects. The best way would be to inhale it in using a diffuser or a cloth or rub it in your skin.

Lavender

The floral-scented lavender oil is known to contribute to a peaceful sleep. Since most people who suffer from GERD say it worsens at night, then this oil will give you a restful sleep.

Put a few drops on your pillow to inhale and you will sleep like a baby. Lavender oil is the go-to remedy for anxiety and lack of sleep during the night.
