Jellyfish Lake – Palau

Unique Lakes

Jellyfish Lake is a coastal lake in Palau on the island of Eil Malk. Eil Malk is part of the Rock Islands between Koror and Peleliu, a group of small, rocky, mostly uninhabited islands in the Southern Lagoon of Palau. There are nearly 70 other marine ponds all over the Rock Islands. Every day, millions of golden jellyfish migrate across the lake horizontally.

Although both species of jellyfish living in the lake have stinging cells, they are usually not sufficiently powerful enough to harm people. It has been recorded that the strings on sensitive areas such as the area around the mouth can be detected. Most tour guides suggest tourists wear protective clothing, especially those people with allergies to jellyfish.

Red sediments and algae in the water give the brilliant, bloody red hue. The lake can be located on the plateau of Altiplano, in the mountain range of the Andes.

Khiluk Lake – British Colombia, Canada

Unique Lakes

Khiluk Lake, also known as the Spotted Lake, is a saline endorheic alkali lake located northwest of Osoyoos in the eastern Similkameen Valley of British Columbia, Canada.
