Mindfulness Meditation

This is the process of ensuring that you are fully present in your thoughts. Being mindful means that you are being aware of who and where you are, and what you are doing, and trying not to be overly reactive to what is going on around you.

You can achieve this meditation from anywhere, and some people actually prefer to sit in a very quiet place, focus on their breathing and close their eyes. You can choose to be mindful at any time during the day, even while you are on the train or plane or your car.

You should try to observe your thoughts and feel your emotions. Let them pass without any form of judgement.

Transcendental Meditation

This is a simple technique with an assigned mantra. You say the word or small phrase quietly and then repeat it over and over in a specific way. It can be practiced for 20 minutes each day, while sitting quietly with your eyes closed.

Ideally, it should allow you to settle inward and have a profound state of rest and relaxation. The goal of this meditation is to achieve some inner peace without any effort or concentration.

Guided Meditation

This is also known as guided imagery, or a visualization meditation. It is a form of meditation whereby you form mental images of situations that you find relaxing. You shall hear people say, “go to your happy place,” where you think of wonderful places to help you relax.

The process should be led by a guide, or a teacher, and it often uses senses such as sounds and smells to evoke a calm feeling.

But What Is Usually Happening During Meditation?

When you are meditating, you are usually focusing on only one thing, such that everything else ceases to exist and simply starts to fall off. During the process, your mind is usually quiet and you are able to access your subconscious mind.

However, you should note that meditation takes practice, and you may not achieve what you want with the first try. It is much easier to do if you have some guidance, such as a teacher or some music to get you going.

Generally, our minds wander so much, that it would be good to simply keep ourselves in check by ensuring that we meditate and concentrate on something that needs our attention.

Does it Work?

Most people say that it does, and they are able to control their minds from wandering and going wild. What you need to do is try it for yourself and find out whether it shall work for you. Of course it’s not for everyone, and some people think it’s weird, but there are some who could swear by it.
